About Us
At A Better Path Psychotherapy, our goal is to aid our clients in understanding the paths that have brought them to where they are and then to work toward finding and traveling along better paths in the future. We work with adolescents and adults on a variety of concerns such as anger management, trauma, stuckness, depression, anxiety, self esteem issues and family of origin issues.
We work from the understanding that all of us are the way we are for very good reasons, but there may be better ways to achieve our goals than in the ways we’ve tried previously.
It is important to us to work with our clients as a cohesive team, developing the most effective, individualized therapeutic strategies. After all, people are different and shouldn’t be pressed into a cookie cutter approach. Some clients benefit from in-depth therapy focusing on childhood trauma and loss—discovering how these events currently impact them and the destructive patterns that result. Others focus on developing a set of tools they can use to cope with the challenges and stressors in their lives—working on changing and improving the ways they may think, feel and act.

Additionally, therapeutic work needs to take place outside of the session for therapy to be the most impactful. Because of this, I work with my clients on strategies to practice between sessions to maximize the work being done.
Since 1999, I have practiced psychotherapy in the Westchester area—working with a variety of populations and concerns—after receiving my Masters in Social Work from New York University. Because I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the ‘R’ certification, sessions are reimbursable under all out of network insurance plans that have mental health coverage.

You’ll find that I am down to earth, authentic and approachable. I employ a varied approach which is informed by over two decades of experience and the belief that good psychotherapy is defined by utilizing the style that best addresses the person in front of you. Whatever the challenge, we will cultivate a trusting partnership to develop a plan and set it in motion.
The relationship, and therefore the fit, between a client and a therapist is essential to developing an effective therapeutic connection. My genuine and personable approach creates the comfortable environment where that can happen.
For more than twenty years, I have been working in a range of community based, programmatic, academic and clinical settings, supporting adults, children and families who were facing a wide variety of challenges. This breadth of experience comes with me into sessions, allowing me to help uncover the strengths that assist my clients in making the changes and adjustments necessary to move forward.
Terri Spano, LCSW-R
In between sunrise and sunset we live our lives. Each day we continue our journey, and like any great adventure, the path leads to a variety of experiences. Some are awe-inspiring views with their beauty leaving us utterly speechless, while others are intense and challenging, but in a positive way. Then there are those experiences that overwhelm our capacity to function.
We will begin your journey of self-discovery from wherever you are in the present moment. Together, we will identify your needs and explore the areas of your life you want to understand more deeply and/or change. We will follow these distress signals like trailheads to their source which dwells within your inner landscape. We will validate and hold space in this inner landscape for the areas of your life that have not been nurtured. We will welcome the parts of you that have been hidden, misunderstood, and /or forgotten.
It is my intention to assist you with becoming aware that you are more than what you think, feel and do—that you have a greater capacity for being “self-led” than perhaps you thought and that beneath the pain and the obscurities of perceived limitations, there is a YOU that has always been and that YOU is unbroken, unchanged, steadfast and strong.
I’ve been a clinical social worker for over 30 years. I think you’ll find my approach warm, easygoing, respectful, and accepting. I have studied and practiced several different holistic paths for healing and wholeness including: Nature Informed Therapy, Guided Autobiography, Interfaith Ministry, and Alternative medicine. Additionally, I am a Certified Mindfulness Informed Professional and a Certified Clinical Anxiety Treatment Professional.
Looking forward to journeying with YOU.
